about
"The Island" was written, arranged, and recorded entirely within a singular, continuous 24-hour period as an "album-a-day" exercise (
crapart.spacebar.org/aad/). No pre-existing material was used in the creation of the songs you hear!
The songs were written and recorded in a rehearsal space in the South Side Slopes just a short swim across the Monongahela River from Pittsburgh, PA.
We had a group ranging anywhere from 2 to 16 people on location during the time period that the album was being created, and with that many people come a lot of different musical influences and ideas. Therefore, the musical styles vary greatly from song to song, but the ideas behind them actually managed to (accidentally) stay somewhat consistent.
The songs deal with topics such as greed, isolation, memory, and the idea of home in a way that ties together nicely with the idea of an "island", which was taken from the title track and first song recorded for the album.
